This looks more like the "marker shortcut" feature I've built some
time ago (for which I still owe you a patch). Extending the current
Quick Marker mechanism would make it a bit cumbersome I think,
requiring a new dialog to handle Quick Marker creation, modification,
deletion, color selection, etc., just like the current marker editor.
At this point I'd rather add to markers the possibility to define a
shortcut: I will make a proposal/patch as soon as I'm done with this
one.

I agree with you (see below for the solution).

It's only a filled, five-point polygon (7 lines of code...) in a
paintEvent method :-o

The hardest part was to find a way to get the ruler redraw itself .

It's more "essential" and less visible, but it's probably better to
avoid clashing with bar numbers and markers. I've prototyped it
already, and will show you soon the results.

I'll commit it as soon as it's satisfying enough (now I'm a bit stuck
with the fact that I figured out that this mark/flag can be seen in
editing windows as well, with unsatisfying look in my opinion).

Sorry for not having followed the rules: any suggestions (or pointer
to)? I searched the wiki, without success.

I really do like these simple but useful things in programs. And
thanks for your precious feedback and encouraging support!
