This has all the attributes of a potentially tedious and pointless argument.

Let's concentrate on the practical.

We have _already made_ a decision about whether to focus primarily on
KDE4 or "pure" Qt4. The decision we made was that whenever we found a
"pure" Qt4 component available that satisfied our need, we would use
that. Then, if it turned out that we could be satisfied all round
with only Qt4, then that would be all to the good. We would have
successfully simplified our build and application dependencies and we
would still have a program that integrates pretty well into every
modern desktop. That would also have the advantage of simplifying
packaging, deployment, and consequently, support.

However, that decision was made in the absence of any compelling
evidence about what, specifically, KDE4 components might add to the
application. The reasoning is really based on what we used to draw
from KDE3, and the recognition that much of that is no longer
necessary because Qt4 does a better job than Qt3 of the same policies
that KDE3 used to provide (and also that KDE4's versions of those
policies don't always look so desirable).

As a consequence, if Matthew -- or anyone else -- has a strong
interest in using KDE4 components in Rosegarden, the way to tell us
about it is to tell us exactly what it is that those KDE4 components
might bring. That's what we're missing here. We aren't going to
change our existing decision just for the sake of it; as developers of
a complex and mature application we are unlikely to be swayed by grand
future visions that may never pay off such as office integration; and
it doesn't help the clarity of the situation to conflate KDE community
with KDE code.
