Well, in theory, yes, the idea was to be able to build a different GUI on top of the same base/ in a different toolkit, and that's exactly what Guillaume wants to do. I don't think Rosegarden really needs to concern itself with something like that unless we really think we might collectively decide to port to some other toolkit one day. I say that's not bloody likely, and Qt is our common law wife by now. Why not just get it over with and get married? This could complicate things for Guillaume if his Cocoa rewrite ever gets off the ground, but even at that, I don't think it would present all that great a challenge, and anyway, it's hardly our problem. > With KDE out of the way, doesn't our port line up more for a port to Mac. I don't think it matters that much, since KDE is supposed to be available for both Windows and Mac eventually, if it isn't already. The biggest obstacle to portability for any of this stuff was getting a free Qt onto all these platforms. That allows everything else to fall into place, and we could probably continue to be a KDE application running on Windows, I think. It might make it easier, just being plain Qt. Even this isn't really a magic bullet though, because the best we could hope to be on Windows or Mac (and I'm talking about this project, not Guillaume's proposed fork) is a GUI with no audio engine. Rosegarden is very married to ALSA, and the L in ALSA is for the one and only platform we can run on until someone does some heavy lifting that has nothing to do with whether or not we use QString in base/. I'll voice my opinion on the whole issue in a separate reply, so it doesn't risk getting lost in all this noise. -- D.
