Sorry, rather an old message here...

Hmm, I think we probably do want to retain (re-connect) the status bar
indications of the type shown there.
These are the various status bar indications found in the old version:
* Time of the note you are waving the mouse pointer over -- this has
never been as useful as it could be, as there's no visual indication
of which note it refers to
* MIDI pitch of the note you are waving the mouse pointer over
* Insert mode (note duration, tuplet/grace/chord mode)
* Status field for text, which in the old version is only used for
hopelessly pointless progress messages ("Sizing and allocating canvas"
etc) but which could be better used for contextual information as in
the matrix ("Click and drag to select" etc)
* Number of events selected -- quite handy actually
* Progress bar -- pretty useless
The (old) matrix has the same indications, except that the status
field is actually used for useful contextual notes; there is no
progress bar; and the insert mode label exists in the status bar but
is unused.
I propose that we lose the progress bar, but try to retain the rest,
taking any opportunities for improving the way they're used in the 1.7
code (which is not generally ideal for the reasons given above).
