Well, I implemented it and I like it a great deal.  I think it makes a
world of difference in terms of keeping a sense of where you are in a
composition.

I'd like to try to make some improvements to how it works with very
long scenes, for example by squashing them a little less vertically
than it does horizontally, but even without such things I'm pretty
keen on it.

Note that you can use the mouse wheel over the blue area to zoom the
main view in and out -- this probably needs to be mentioned in the
status bar (sigh, another task there).  To me, that also makes quite a
big difference because it makes the blue box the place where pretty
much all "large-scale" mouse navigation can be carried out very
straightforwardly, without any annoying messing with scrollbars.
