It affects the screen (and not the Lilypond output at all).  Go to
View -> Size -> 6 pixels (now, why is that showing as "6 pixel(s)" on
my screen? no translation for it in en_GB?) and you'll see the result.
 It's just that there are two options in the config dialog for this,
to set up default values separately for single- or multiple-staff
notation views.

My inclination is that single-staff views should default at 8 and
multiple staffs at 6, but at the moment they're both 8 (and in any
case the config dialog setting is currently ignored by the notation
view).

Zooming looks pretty ropey in notation -- you get a lot of missing
stems and the like.  Changing the font size works much better where
you actually want to do work at a different size from the default
rather than just taking an overview.

Ideally the zoom would work by re-drawing in a different font size
(and then scaling that, if we're at a very extreme zoom) so we'd have
the best of all worlds, but unfortunately that would appear to be much
too slow, and also it doesn't produce quite the same results (the
spacing differs).
