Absolutely right I think. This would be wise all round. There should only be one selection visible on screen at a time. We can't have keys like cut/paste doing different things depending on whether the mouse happens to be near the "notes selection" or near the "controllers selection". There doesn't need to be a common selection object; we just need to make sure that the selection in the "other" widget is cleared when one begins in the current widget. Then the main cut/copy/paste actions delegate off to your widget if that's where the current selection is.
