Now that you mention it, I only had a corner of this thought and let it go as 
impractical in my earlier writing, but it's what we should do.  These control 
points represent physical events (how to handle this once we have interpolated 
curves is an interesting thing to consider) just like notes or clefs or key 
signatures, so why should they have to use a different mechanism at all?  They 
just happen to be events that can't easily be represented on the main edit 
widget, so they have their own special viewer.

We should have one selection shared between the main viewer widget (matrix or 
notation) and the ruler.  It's probably unthinkably impractical to actually be 
able to sweep from one to the other, but you should be able to take a 
selection you made in the main viewer and add a sweep of control events to it, 
and cut/copy/paste them as one.

(I think at the tail end of Classic, the sweep selection on the editor just 
extended to include any control items that were in that span of time, and 
there was no fine control over the process.  I can't quite remember what my 
objections were.  Anyway, it was never really complete, and it was buggy.)
