I'm pleased to see you and several other package maintainers interacting with us and raising these issues. Some things really will have to be patched at the package level, but I'm always interested in upstreaming anything that can be upstreamed, and I've been kind of saddened in the past by how little maintainers chose to interact with us, and how much silly extra work they undertook for no apparent reason. I've found good patches we would have gladly accepted, but nobody ever mentioned them. I have a lot of work to do, and one thing I by no means have time for is to keep up with issues in Fedora, issues in OpenSUSE, issues in Debian, etc. I can't be checking out all of your packages and sifting through them to see what patches you wrote, and I can't help if you don't keep me in the loop.
