What ALSA MIDI connections are active before you File -> New? Excessive CPU usage -- like, machine brought to a crawl CPU usage -- has sometimes been associated in RG 1.x with Rosegarden connecting its outputs to its own inputs via the ALSA "MIDI Thru" client. This was supposed never to happen in Thorn, but it's worth checking.
