I get exactly the same pattern here. On first load of RG, under
playback the CPU load is very high, like one core at 100%, and GUI is
stuttering. When I do file->new or file->load I'm back to normal
(which is still pretty high IMO about 25-30 % cpu as displayed in the
RG widget. My spec: 2.4 GHz core 2 duo, Ubuntu 10.04 with kernel:
2.6.31-10-rt)

Hmm, I took a look at top when RG makes the high cpu problem, under playback:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 4195 root 20 0 121m 81m 26m R 89 4.8 11:59.93 Xorg
27017 lars 20 0 204m 120m 29m S 14 7.0 0:06.88 rosegarden

Then I loaded a song and played it, top says:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 4195 root 20 0 103m 67m 27m R 31 3.9 13:00.11 Xorg
27017 lars 20 0 134m 49m 31m S 17 2.9 0:18.42 rosegarden

- so %CPU for Xorg skyrockets to 89% at the time of the problem,
compared to 31% normal.

I just tried the repository RG version 10.02, and it seems not to have
this problem.

Best regards,
Lars
