I've been successfully using a firewire card for a few years already on
different Linux systems.
My card is Edirol-FA66.
On the FFADO project page you may find cards which are fully supported
(along with others reported as working or partially supported):

If you're looking for a firewire device, I would recommend fa-66, however
there are a few more out there working reliable and stable as well.
