Okay, I've tried opening and re-opening the segment window, but nothing seems to do the trick -- it simply will not allow me to select two notes on either side of a barline. So, I will assume this is indeed a bug related to v10.04.2 and look forward to seeing it work after I upgrade to v12.04, which comes with Debian wheezy. Thanks for your explanation and thanks also to D. Michael McIntyre for his regarding the "Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at Barlines" function.
