Although I have been lurking here for some time, I am a newcomer to
this group and to IETF participation in general so please forgive my
naivety but this search for solid terminology reminds me of something
I am told that Jon Postel once said:

"A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A
route indicates how we get there."

I have always found that statement to be a great summary of how the
Internet works in the simplest terms possible. It appears that the
attempt here is to restate it as:

"An Identifier indicates what we seek. A Locater indicates where it
is. A route indicates how we get there."

Am I way off base here?

I am not convinced that an Address by design or definition combines
identity and topology. Yes IP addresses have come to be used for both
but that is not necessarily required by their (original/default)
nature. Because the line has become blurred, I do see the potential
value in using new terminology or alternatively, by clarifying the
line.

FWIW, if the definition stopped here, I would have agreed with it.
