Do you happen to find anything recent regarding this from the systemd side where they declare syslog as dead or obsolete? Might be that the systemd folks in Fedora pushed a bit harder then necessary to get this change accepted by FESCO. That said, I've also seen systemd people recommend to use rsyslog if you want to do more flexible or complex logging, like see e.g. Lennarts response [1] on the systemd-devel mailing list. By actually doing sysloggish things, but saying > "hey, we are not that obsolete technology".
