That said, I've also seen systemd people recommend to use rsyslog if
you want to do more flexible or complex logging, like see e.g.
Lennarts response [1] on the systemd-devel mailing list.

I've seen some of his comments as well, and in context they have always seemed
to me to be a way for him to divert any criticism that journald didn't do
something (early on it was frequently after he claimed that it would and then
got corrected)
a lot of his justification for why the journal was needed are things that were
true in sysklog, but had not been true for rsyslog for years. a handful were
things like the trusted properties that had been discussed, but not implemented
yet, but were implemented within a few days of his claiming that it was
impossible for syslog to provide such capabilities (or even be extended to
provide such capabilities), so they needed to throw everything out and start
from scratch.
unfortunantly, he really was abrasive on the topic early on.
He also makes no secret that his intent is to replace all the basic plumbing of
a system, so he will keep stepping on people's toes going forward.
There are not a lot of things he could have done worse in terms of working with
the people who were already doing a lot of log related work.
Now, it would be nice if the journald/systemd team changed their attitude, but
reading the responses to the journald bug that systemd exposed a few months ago
doesn't make me think that it's changed much.
