I
agree with your sentiments Rusty, which is why I'm not too crazy about this
analogy. I would not say that anyone has "casually dismissed" the the sacrifice
these soldiers and their families have made to protect the safety of our
nation.
The
facts do remain though that rate of Americans who die due to gunshot wounds
in Washington, DC is greater than the rate in Iraq. It puts it in perspective,
but does not excuse the deaths in Iraq or Washington or anywhere else. One
innocent life is too many, but we have to be realistic about the world we live
in and the reality that the process of making it a safer world does not come
without a price.
I may
be wrong, but I cannot remember a single time in the history of the world that
two democracies have gone to war. Maybe so, but nothing comes to mind right
now. The spread of democracy is vital to the future of peace throughout the
world. I have the utmost respect for all soldiers who fight to maintain our
freedom and the utmost disdain for those who work to undermine that
fight.
