World Book
Fair: A platform for RTI awareness

The ongoing 18th World Book Fair in the national capital is not only displaying
a wide range of books for the book lovers, but it is also serving to be a
platform to attract huge public attention in order to craete awareness among
them about 'Right to Information'. Many organisations working for the promotion
of RTI, such as Times Foundation, Parivartan and Kabir, have came together in
the fair for the noble cause. A Compact Disk (CD) containing information
regarding RTI in details, was jointly launched by them to provide all necessary
training to the people as how to use RTI in an efficient and effective manner.
Highlighting the importance of such
training material, Central Information Commissioner M M Ansari said that it
could be a useful tool for information seekers as well as information
providers. "It is easy to handle and very informative for all sections of
the society. I think, it will provide all necessary guidelines to the common
man and related officer. We all know that the wide spread knowledge about RTI
is the heart of its success," said Ansari while unveiling the pack of CDs.
Speaking on the occasion, the noted social
activist and Magsaysay award winner for his pioneering campaign to spread
awareness about RTI, Arvind Kejriwal said that the widespread use of RTI is the
only way to eliminate corruption from its roots. "Everybody is aware of
the penetration of corruption around. But, earlier, we didn't have any such law
in place which had the potential to ask not only questions to the related
authorities but also fix their responsibilities. Now, the ball is in our court
and we should maximise the use of RTI for establishing a justified society and
system in place," said Kejriwal.
The CD priced at Rs 100 will be available
in various workshops, seminars and other related functions across the country.
However, for its promotion, the price has been reduced to Rs 50 at the Book
Fair. The CD will provide guidelines for filling an RTI application, knowledge
about various appealing authorities and procedures of dealing with late,
incomplete or wrong information.
