Dear Sarbajit,

It's been a long time since we interacted and I thought you may be interested
in having an update on the Mumbai bijlee front.

You are probably aware that we are a small group in Mumbai taking on the
electricity issue with MERC.

One of our group members has received another 'wonderful' RTI reply from the
MERC about Reliance Infrastructure's status as an Electricity Distributor in
Mumbai. (Rel Infra is the new company name for Rel Energy).

In fact I wrote to MERC asking them for an explanation - but, not surprisingly,
have not received any response from them.

It was an RTI response that earlier exposed the fact that the Chairman of MERC,
Dr. Pramod Deo (now Chairman of CERC) was once a Director in BSES Ltd (the same
Rel Energy company) and he had 'hidden' this fact in his application for the
post of MERC Chairman.

The Supreme Court has paved the way for competition in Mumbai's supply by
declaring that Tata Power always HAD a license for retail supply, something
that REL had got MERC to 'stay' in order to enjoy a monopolistic situation.

We have filed a case in the Supreme Court already and REL's License status
issue is now subjudice!
