I used QNX intensively many years ago and was a nice experience It was
the best system I'd ever seen on a PC. At those times it lacked in many
things, e.g a compiler for large applications, but I found it easier to
install and use than any Unix like OS for PCs. The real time
performances where wonderfull.
That's why I included QNX services in our variant of RTLinux and now in
RTAI.
Thank to a well implemented MicroKernel Architecture it allowed you to
build your own OS and it was a true distributed hard real time system.
Now I read that Quantum has implemented SMP capabilities also. But I'm
not up to date.
Linux architecture is lagging far behind QNX. It is in fact standard
UNIX "a la Back", i.e. late 60s early 70s technology, and its only,
great-great-great....., merit is that of being free and supported by a
lot of people around the world.
I think that now QNX could be even better, and perhaps a lot more
expensive.
Ciao, Paolo.
