Yes!

Conrad...you are the man.

after a restart and the export path command, I was able to run
sudo gem update --system successfully

so now...

which gem
/usr/bin/gem

gem -v
1.3.5

which ruby
/usr/bin/ruby

ruby -v
ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [universal-darwin10.0]

This has been making my head spin all day. I really appreciate the
help. Are there any other commands I need to run to get everything
running smoothly in Snow Leopard?
