Use rvm method as mentioned boefore, its the easiest way to get whole
"toolchain" up and running - forget about GUI installers included in
NetBeans and Aptana (especialy the second, barely anything working in there
:P)

so:
-command line tools for managing gems
-IDE for actual coding (NetBeans is imho best free full featured ide
available for ror)
