Many users, particularly on technical lists, prefer that a reply is inserted at appropriate points into the previous message, so that the full post reads like a question and answer sequence. This requires you to hit reply then scroll through the previous message inserting bits of text at the appropriate points. Whilst doing this you may remove any redundant bits of the previous message.
