Peter (and others who are curious) --

This may sound like heresy on this e-list, but it's the truth: The only
advantage of S scale is size. In every other respect, HO runs rings
around S regarding equipment availability. Sure, S today has lots of
stuff compared to S twenty years ago. But the same can be said about HO
ands N, and to a lesser extent O. Fact is, nearly any car or loco for
nearly any railroad can be found in HO.

Your deciding factor should be consistent with your primary interest.
If your primary interest is a particular prototype, maybe S is for you
but probably not. If your primary interest is operation, S is as good
as (no better than) any other scale. If your primary interest is seeing
trains run, then S is excellent -- the best compromise between "heft"
and space utilization.
