The Greenbrier/Gunderson website indicates their loaded stack & Auto-Max
cars have a maximum height of 20'2" (Plate F?). There are plenty of places
where they couldn't run, and more than a few instances of bridges being
taken out by misrouted equipment.

In places where they do run, you can sometimes see notches cut into the
edges of arched tunnel ceilings, since the cars won't clear the taper in
the original AAR clearance plate.

A one-size-fits-all answer would probably be a 22 foot clearance, but the
real answer depends on the era & type of operation.
