You can certainly get away with running just about anything together these
days. I saw one BNSF consist with a Dash 9-44 (in new speed lettering) and
a B23-7 running on the Memphis - Little Rock local last weekend. This train
typically uses combinations that include GP9's, GP35's, GP38-2's with at
least one "new" GE unit. The CSX transfers to the UP will have one or more
SD40-2, SD38-2, GP40-2 with a road slug (usually exGP30). Much better than a
coal drag any day. For rail fans in the group, Memphis may be the only place
in the US where five Class 1's run side-by-side in one spot - BNSF, NS, UP,
CSX and CN. About 70 times a day. Without knowing the trackage ownership, it
would be difficult to determine what railroad's train is running by based on
the equipment.

I have never had any problem running any of AM's diesels or SHS in a consist
using DCC. One of the many features/blessings of DCC is the ability to mate
disparate units into a smooth running consist. Helper service is also
relatively easy due to the speed controls.

Hi Ken, Thanks for your response. I want to model a fairly modern
era so I could use any of the locos, GP9s would be modeled as very
old, U25B and Gp35 middle age and SD60 fairly new. Eventually I'd
like some of each kind to mix and match on a local freight. Other
than the choice of gription wheels is there any improvement to the
U25B drive compared to the GP9 drive? Would there be any problem
running the various models together. Yes, I plan to use DCC and will
try to add soundtraxx. Regards, Dave
