Earl:

Yes the Mikado can be converted to DCC, but you will have to strip
out all the TMCC electrical components and hard wire install the
decoder (or hardwire in a plug for a plug & play decoder). Not very
hard by the way, just takes some time and skill with a soldering iron.

I make this statement based on my decoder installations in other
engines - I have not actually performed the conversion on the Mikado
(I would jump on this loco if I could get scale wheels - Lionel are
you listening!). If there is sufficient physical space, a decoder
can be installed in any S locomotive.

As you probably already know, TMCC and DCC are not compatible systems
so you may have to make a choice between the two if you plan on
running your equipment on one set of tracks. Our temporary Christmas
tree layout is TMCC and is fun to operate, but my control system
choice for the S scale layout is DCC because of type of operations I
want to eventually run.

If you decide to do the conversion, I would be glad to help.
