 I've built them up out of Evergreen styrene. The secret is to mount the 
coupler on a  
drawbar that pivots on the truck kingpin, but is allowed to swing independently 
of 
the truck motion. This keeps the space between cars constant at all times.
(Traditional truck-mounted couplers actually draw the cars closer together on 
curves- not desirable). 

You can have barely any gap between absolutely rigid diaphragms, and they do 
fine 
around a 36" radius S curve. You do need to have smooth buffing surfaces, since 
they will push against each other if run in reverse.
