Cork alone is fairly quiet. However, we learned from our modular layout with code 148 over cork that ballast glued down with Elmer's glue created a noisy reverberation when trains ran over more than low speed. Fix is supposed to be to glue down ballast with matte medium, which would be expensive but stays flexible. Chuck Smith, On matters of style swim with the current.
