The problem that caused the original Rex models to "lope" had to do 
with spacing between the 2nd and 3rd axles.  You can address it by 
filing the rear (3rd axle) bearing block holder in the frame.  I 
believe Sam Powell wrote a nice comprehensive article about this for 
the old (or new?) SGH.  Dick Karnes should have copies in the library.  

That's not to say an improved motor and gear box won't help the model's 
operation, just that the lope comes from a different source.  I have no 
experience with the models since Putt took over so maybe they have 
addressed that already.  My experience comes from converting one of the 
original Rex models into an NYC B11p 0-6-0.
