Hi Bill, I don't think S is actually shrinking, I see lots of
interest from both HO scalers wanting to move up to larger equipment
and from O scalers wanting to downsize their space requirements. S is
on hold now, the only thing keeping it from really blooming is a lack
of modern prototype equipment, a lot of these guys on the sidelines
like to consume and they are just waiting for S to reach that critical
point where they can buy most of what they need for their new layouts
then the switch overs will occur.
Secondhand S scale models do very well in the market place, they
hold their value much more than HO or O scale does so that too tells
me the demand is rising. If someone like athearn or MTH started
selling a broad range of modern S scale models at mass production
prices I think S would in a few years become the dominant scale or at
least a very active player, look how ON30 took off when bachman
started pushing those little guys, even though they are very limited
in their application and era.
If you think of it in practical terms there's little physical
reason to buy HO size compared to S size, the slightly larger size of
S is much more convient to work with, operates much better, and still
will still fit in a modest space. Back in the old days the magazines
would have done us all a better service if they'd promoted just S
scale instead of both HO and O scale, I've modeled with all and see
great advantages in S size ...dave
