Lionel is just, well, Lionel. The company reminds me a bit of Eastman Kodak.
Having knocked around the photo biz for more decades than I like to think
about, I have seen the "yellow giant," as Kodak has been called, go from
being an aloof, king of the hill biggest producer of photography products on
the planet, to a running scared, downsizing elfin of a company. They thought
for many, many years that they could just go their own way, making the
products at their convenience, at the best profit to them. Along came Fuji,
a nimble, Japanese outfit that made better film, better cameras, listened to
it's consumer base, and one day Kodak woke up and realized that those
Japanese upstarts had taken 50% of their business, and were eroding the
other half quickly. Kodak responded by introducing a flurry of new films,
etc. The digital revolution of course totally changed the ball game for all
players. In a somewhat similar scenario, Lionel did not produce any Flyer
accessories until MTH did, saw that some of the S crowd bought them with
both hands. Perhaps, just perhaps, as SHS and AM, et al, help to enlarge the
market, and we see more offerings from K-Line (assuming they remain in
business) Lionel will one day come to realize that the S scale market really
is a force to be reckoned with. Don't laugh. Only Joe Willie Namath knew for
certain (guaranteed it in fact) that the New York Jets would beat the
Baltimore Colts for one of the biggest upsets in sports history.
We gotta have faith...
Cheers :)
