Folks, I have been fighting this problem for some time, I prefer the
smaller size of the converted and unconverted #5's. They also seem to
work better with the under the tie magnets and electro magnetics that I
have. On the other hand since they are getting hard to come by, I have
switched to the 802's and the newer SHS version for some of my cars and
engines. They are more forgiving on my trackage( I do have some up's
and down's) especially on longer cars. Problem is that the bigger box
of the 802's and the slightly weird mounting arrangement on the SHS
version can cause mounting problems especially on the older models.
Just yesterday I was doing some switching in my coal mine area, I
had brought in some cars with #5's and everything worked fine. I later
picked up those cars and dropped off a couple of hoppers with the 802's
but refused to uncouple--very frustrating as the siding is hard to get
too to hand uncouple.
I have long ago wished for a true S sized coupler with the
simplicity of the #5. HO has the advantages of numerous arrangements of
their couplers--hi mounting, low mounting and different length shanks
etc. I have mentioned this before as an ideal business to be in--make
something that every piece of rolling stock can use! Wouldn't it be
nice if the hi-rail guys and the scale guys all used similar couplers!
I know, where's the 50K for tooling--but one can wish!
