and he notes -

As far as titles go, the first "The Love Bug" was a comedy short
produced in 1919 and again in 1925 by Hal Roach Studios. The first VW
version was released by Disney in 1968 and again as a sequel "Herbie,
the Love Bug" in 1982 and a made for TV version in 1997 and most
recently as "Herbie Fully Loaded" in 2005. They were called 'Beetles'
as far back as I can remember, but I guess "Herbie The Love Beetle"
wouldn't make good box-office.

They all used the '68 VW as a prop and the models appear to be
accurate. But a check on the dimensions might be a good idea:

Length: 4 m (13.32 ft) - Approx 2 3/8" in S
Width: 1.6 m (5.08 ft) - Approx 7/8" in S
Height: 1.5 m (4.92 ft) - Approx 7/8" in S
Length between axles: 2.4 m (7.87 ft) - Approx 1 1/2" in S

I remember a classmate had one back in the early 50s. Small rear
window, no gas gauge and turn signals were small levers located in
the column behind the doors. I bought a VW '59 convertible in 1962
and ran up 100,000 miles commuting to and from Boston before I traded
it on a Volvo. With 36 hp in the rear and ten gallons of gasoline
practically in my lap I learned to use discretion when battling traffic!
