Ralph,
  Since the maxium grade that one should use is around 4 percent with 2 
percent more realistic, bending the subroadbed to that transition is not 
difficult.  I normally transition from a level to a say, 2 percent grade, over 
two or three feet.  This is enough that couplers won't dip in the grade change 
and have uncoupled trains.  Same with the top of the grade.
