Jim and Friends,
I don't know exactly where you went in 84' but it wasn't Houston
for the NMRA. Houston held the NMRA national in 89' where the Houston S
Gaugers first ran their modules. We would have welcomed others joining
us but I'm not sure if Dallas or New Orleans were modular at that time.
Other groups would have had to come a real long way. Of course, the
Houston bunch drove all the way to Denver for the NASG national
there--try that today at $3per gallon!
We have, since 89' doubled our layout size with several interesting
sections and most 'play well together'. We have done three setups this
year and a fourth coming next month. I think we all admit that most of
our running is round the oval for the family situations, but we do have
the opportunity to do switching. We normally draw a crowd when we do
switching, so I might encourage the other groups to do some of that to
add some life to the operation. Because we can do switching and run
mainline trains thanks to DCC we have a lot of opportunity to keep the
general public and the modeler entertained. Several years ago, we set
up our freight yard and lead track (4 sections of about 24' in length)
at a NMRA regional just for switching. Several guest operators had good
time switching cars and got to experience the way S handles.
