The metal NASG standards gauges are the essential tool. Homemade
track gauges can be made to hold the rails close to alignment till the
actual spiking is done with the NASG gauge. Gauges can be made from a
piece of plexiglas or even dense hardwood with two grooves cut at the
proper gauge, a hole drilled in middle will allow a temporary nail to
be driven to hold everything near it's final alignment, or one can
just set some weight on them if desired. I usually make three or four
gauges to snap on the rails for a couple of feet ahead of the worksite
as I spike along the right of way.
If the NASG wants to make something else? I would find more use
for a 57 foot mechanical reefer car :>) ......dave
