This sounds good but it's something I am sure I could not do.  How do you 
cut the grooves and how do you get the proper gauge?

If these gauges are accurate It might be worth your time to make a bunch of 
them and sell them for five or six dollars.  I can imagine cutting out a 
space on one side to make a three point gauge.

There is definitely a need for gauges and very few (or apparently none in 
three point) available.
