while i model and handlay trackage in P48, i would approach the
guaging of trackage questions the same way if i were modeling in
S,P64,HO,P87,etc. for general guage checking and handlaying, a flat
sheet metal guage works fine for the most part. just don't drag the
guage down the rails as it will wear the tits out, giving incorrect
wide guaging. secondly, i don't use 3-point guages as they can throw
the guage out depending on the radius of curvature. thirdly, i use a
good venier caliper for all guaging for my turnouts. i suggest against
any cheap plastic caliper. spend the money on a good pair in the $90+
range and it will become your good friend for life.
lastly, and i don't know why this is true but i have met a whole lot
of modelers who don't have a clue about track and wheelsets being in
or out of guage. like the recent posts about tomalco turnouts having a
guage problem. one can't assume that anything like this is correctly
produced without checking it while installing it to make sure that the
first attempt will hopefully be the last. i hate re-doing stuff if i
don't have to. same checking goes for wheelsets too, especially on
loco wheels.
remember that the track guage is 4'-8 1/2" which is .8828" in s scale.
and i would not rely on what the NMRA thinks the standard is. they
tended to make the tolerances very liberal, and that came from the
time when it was thought that nobody was capible of doing any close
tolerance work. DUH

happy tracklaying and merry christmas from indy
