Hello -
Several months ago I bought a Helper Service SW-1. I just got around to
opening it up and trying to run it. I thought I had ordered the scale version
but find I must make a lot of changes before it is ready-to-run DC scale.
The first problem was replacing the flyer couplers. The couplers are mounted
to a plate which attaches to the trucks with four small screws - might be
metric - the body of the screw is about 0.050 inches and the head is cross
slotted - not Phillips. I was able to remove six of the eight screws on the
two trucks but the last two would not move. After I destroyed the slots by
trying I got the dremel out and ground the heads off. Fortunately the plate
and screws are not needed with Kadee couplers. Ironically the directions say -
on reinstalling them - "do not tighten the screws too tight"
The next task was to replace the hi-rail wheels with code 110 wheels. Here I
am stuck. The instructions say "with a small screwdriver, gently pry off the
end of the plastic sideframe/gearbox cover to release the tab that holds it to
one of the gearboxes."
I cannot see any way to pry anything off. After my destructive experience with
the coupler cover I am afraid to try anything drastic. The cover is one piece
with the two sideframes but I see no way to pry off anything.
Can someone give me some tips on this?
Many thanks.
Art Armstrong
