Hello -
Many thanks to all who offered helpful suggestions - especially Gale Hall who
suggested cutting the plastic retainer clip off and re-using screws on the
bottom plate. That is a clever and elegant solution. Many thanks, Gale. That
worked although the plastic is really tough to cut in place. Even when I could
see how the connection was made I could not pry off the second truck so I cut
it also.
I also found that the cover mounting holes in the casting do not go all the way
through the casting and the screws are smaller than 00-90. I though of
drilling the holes through and re-tapping them but will save that for later.
Don Thompson offered to change the wheels for $25.00 - almost worth it except
for the delay in shipping.
Apparently there are not enough scale customers to justify packaging two
versions of the loco. Perhaps it would be useful to offer third-party service
to make all the required DC scale conversions before shipping the model. On
each conversion SHS would save a set of hi-rail wheels and the lobster-claw
couplers. That ought to be worth something.
One more question: I have the loco running now with the reversing plug in the
PC board. On the inside top of the body casting is a fairly large PC board
with a big rectifier in the middle. Does it continue under the three spring
contacts into the front of the body? There is a board there that I guess is
for the LED lighting. I would like to keep the lights but remove the board
with the rectifier on it.
Is this O.K.? - I don't want to open another box of squirrels.
Thanks again for the help. The loco runs very smoothly and I look forward to
using it. It is my first diesel and I am delighted to see how well it accepts
my less than perfect track laying. With my steamers every turnout called for
some discussion.
