I have been away from the railroad a great deal, I took a railfanning
tour with Steve Doyle. We went to Saipan to see a Narrow Gauge
Sugarcane train. Unfortuantely, it was just a display in the park. We
did see some other great history on Guam, Saipan, Tinain and Iwo Jima.
Gale, your idea about trading treasures is a great one. In thte PPSSW,
we have a couple of guys who have actually taken on projects like
that. Unfortunately, they have gotten wise and it is more difficult to
get them to take the projects home. This might be a great way to see
new projects.
I am back to thinking about putting in a garden railway, I came home to
below freezing temperatures here in Minnesota so that idea has cooled
down a bit.
When I am not model railroading, I am in a small business and it is
difficult, I think all business is. A hobby business seems to be full
of even more challenges. In example, we have four lasers and some
really neat CNC mills. I know I could do some neat things with them
but I already spend too much time at work so I have resisted. Over the
years, I have done a couple of things but only for fun. That was the
idea behind the MN&S car I had run for me and the idea behind the
newest project soon to be announced, the "Great Beers" billboard
series. This is an idea that should have been developed in Steve
Doyle's Pub but in fact it was the product of a Tiki bar in the
Marianas. It came as a mystic sign formed in a cloud of rising cigar
smoke. I digress, to the person thinking of starting a basement
business, the advise was do it for fun. To the rest of us, let's
remember that the guys who make our stuff are doing it more for fun
than to get rich and be nice to them.
The Pines and Prairies S Scale Workshop welcomes Ted Larson back to
Minnesota. Ted has alread invited us to visit in May, Steve Doyle
bought new blades for his sawsall in anticipation. Another PPSSW hero,
Jeff Saine just moved into a new house with a great train room and he
has invited us over in May also. The PPSSW is going to have a great
spring, this is a good time to start these sorts of projects as you can
have some windows open so the de-construction dust clears a bit
faster. The families can also go outside and enjoy the weather and not
listen to the "noise" of PPSSW progress. One other good reason is that
we don't meet as much in the summer. This will allow the spouse some
cool down time to get over the destruction before she sees us again.
Regards,
Ken Z.
