I once read a suggestion that placing the ties a little closer than
prototypical made the track length seem longer - sort of a selective
compression / forced perspective kind of thing.
I handlay all my track, so when I first started I experimented to see
what "looked right" to me. I figured there was so much variation
dependent on multiple factors in the prototype that anything
reasonable would match some prototype practice.
