Michael and others,

Lorrell Joiner of O scale Great Southern fame, who did a Kalmback video on
handlaying track 15 or so years ago, advocated just that and his results were
pretty convincing.

That said, it still bothered me to use "more ties than necessary" for a
prototypical appearance, (especially since I would be "wasting" the extra
ties).

I made a tie spacing jig on a 1 X 4 about 36" long with mainline and
siding/yard tie spacing on one side and switch tie spacing on the other. I
think I used 20" tie centers on the mainline and switch spacings and around 28"
or 30" centers on the siding/yard side.

I once read a suggestion that placing the ties a little closer than
prototypical made the track length seem longer - sort of a selective
compression / forced perspective kind of thing.

I handlay all my track, so when I first started I experimented to see
what "looked right" to me. I figured there was so much variation
dependent on multiple factors in the prototype that anything
reasonable would match some prototype practice.
