Tim,  Your present layout looks very nice and kitbashing locomotives is 
a great way to progress in the hobby.  I think way too many folks stop 
with what Gilbert built.  I really think old A.C. just gave us a good 
start.  When you get the basement done and start your layout with scale 
track and DCC you will stretch your abilities and learn alot.  Welcome.

In regards to Kadee's, they're certainly not perfect but you will find 
switching your yards to be a rewarding experience most of the time.  I 
use a combination of under-the-tie magnets, homemade electro magnets and 
manual uncoupling with a pick in various locations.  They all work most 
of the time with most of the cars.  The tricky thing is to position the 
magnets correctly, if your using the under track type, but you won't 
know that until you have run the longest cars, shortest cars, special 
cars and engines with various coupler arrangements through them.
