and he notes -

It would seem that a controversy exists over nuthin'. If I'm not
mistaken, the attraction to S Gauge is not the size of the following
but rather the size of the gauge itself. Larger than H0, smaller than
0, perfect for a small basement, attic or spare room. If it ever
really became popular (and for six decades it hasn't) I doubt that
many present day adherents would switch scales. Where would they go?

0 Gauge is already ten times bigger than S and H0 is ten times
greater than 0. 00 and TT are all but extinct leaving N and G Gauges
which are larger than 0 is now. But I don't see the great leap
forward happening - at least in my lifetime. At 70 I don't get
excited over the need for an auto rack, or a speeder, or another
caboose (unless its AF) and I do enjoy the comradery, but I have
friends in other scales too and many more who are interested in AF,
Lionel and prototype railroading so S''s growth is a non-issue as far
as losing touch with fellow enthusiasts.

Speaking of AF cabooses, I must correct you on one point: "There
used to be a guy who stomped on AF plastic cabooses when acting as
Auctioneer. Scale folks would go just to cheer him on and rid the
planet of some AF stuff. Not me, of course, but "others" who need to
remain nameless for their own safety." I believe I've seen your
smiling face at more than one auction where I sent a caboose to it's
untimely if not dramatic fate. Stomping on an AF caboose is very
therapeutic and is recommended for preventing hypertension, hair loss
and dyspepsia. I can attest to that fact as I am not bothered by any
of these maladies!

No need to worry - S Gauge will grow and comradeship with it - If it
becomes another H0, friends will still be friends and there will
still be those who complain - it goes with the hobby and not the scale...
