5. Tom's Turnouts -- These will work properly for some hirail wheelsets but
probably not for all. The presence of guard rails requires dimensional
compatibility (back-to-back wheelset dimension that is equal to or greater
than the distance between inside of flangeways at guardrail and frog).
DIfferent manufacturers' wheelsets differ in this dimension. SHS and AM
hirail wheelsets conform to each other. Many AF and almost all Lionel
wheelsets do not. None of the Tom's products will provide reliable operation
with scale wheelsets.

Hello,

Obviously this needs to be addressed. If you look at the photo that Dick
posted you will see that there is not an insert in the ‘pot hole’ before the
frog. My turnouts will not work without the insert. Please go to my
website for some pictures of turnouts with the insert in place. My website
is under construction; as a result not all of my posted pictures are there.
You can view more if you go to the URL for my page on Paul Yorke’s site:

My turnouts have been thoroughly reviewed in the S press before and one
review was even done by a scaler. Please see the NASG Dispatch, June 2005
and/or the S Gaugian, January 2006.

And yes, of course the back to back dimension of your wheelsets has to be
within reason. Have you ever read an article on tuning up your rolling
stock? What is always the first thing mentioned? Right, proper gauging of
the wheelsets. Fifty year old toys might need a tune up – new Flyonel is a
mess, but can be corrected. The good folks over at ASG recommend using a
dime as a gauge for back to back spacing of the toy train wheelsets and I
concur, however I recommend 23/32” (the thickness of a ¾” piece of hardwood
stock) which is about .03125” wider. Either works.

Like all manufacturers, my products have evolved through feedback from my
customers (the items Earl sent Dick are very early production). Many
improvements have been incorporated of the years. The #6 crossing proved to
be too fussy for most people and has been replaced with a #6 movable point
crossing.

Out of all the people on this list, am I correct in assuming that no one
made it to any of the layout tours at the last S Spree in Ohio? That’s too
bad, because you would have seen my turnouts in action on one of the tours
with brass engines and Hi-rail cars operating reliably through them.
