I can only speak for myself, but my motivation for wanting to seamlessly run
LAF, scale, AF-compatible equipment is that there are things about each
variety of S that I like.

I like to be able to run an operating log dump or coal dump car; I like the
vintage look of both old and new AF equipment, but I also like the much more
scale-like appearance of SHS, AM and others.

For my money, and since it IS my money, I find the variety of the various
type of equipment and the action features of operating cars and accessories
make it more fun for me and visiting relatives of all ages. I hasten to add
that I have only a small, temporary layout, but have that mega-pike pictured
in my head :)

To each his own of course. I personally enjoy seeing how other modelers
interpret their hobby via how they construct their layouts.
