Roy and Earl,
Roy, have you ever considered full length passenger car sides from
Laser Horizons? They make a bunch of prototype accurate window
arrangements and skirting choices in several roads, including NYC, PRR,
SP, UP ,etc even some CN, DL&W. See: http://www.dsop.com and scroll down
to Merchandise Service model railroad equipment. Laser Horizons is on
that page. S scale sides are $22/pr.
If you can find some of the streamlined wooden roofstock that was
made a few years back by Ed L and others (I think) all you'd have to
scratchbuild would be the ends and underbody/floor. There was also an
article on scratchbuilding an entire streamlined coach in O scale out of
styrene including the roof in Model Railroader January 2004.
Earl, instead of painting the wooden roofstock of the JC Models
cars, have you considered using Bare Metal Foil? It is adhesive backed,
comes in various "sheens", can be cut into strips to represent the roof
seams and will eliminate the wood grain that is so difficult to cover,
especially with silver paint. Just a thought, never tried it myself in
this type of application.
