Butch, One of the Houston S Gaugers members used to be a Sunset dealer
so most of us got some. I bought a second one later--from Rollie I
think, so we had some strong investments in them.
The belt drive seems to work okay when the engine warms up but I don't
think anybody would call that a great drive line. We did a little
(actually a lot) of work replacing the belt with a chain drive which
helped them considerably. I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to
also replace the dual motors with a single, perhaps, larger one. As
they are now they pull a lot of cars and the detail is a little crisper
than the plastic ones. I've added some extra BTS & Overland parts,
painted for the Milwaukee Road, so they're looking good. I don't run
them often, as one is 'cold blooded' so it needs some additional work to
get the 'jerkies' out. Now that we'll have Milwaukee Cabooses they
will be run much more often.
I think a couple of folks have simply replaced the whole chassis with a
AM unit. That would make them run well together. That would be a great
article for somebody to write as there are lots of them being passed
around on e-bay and at shows.
I don't know about the cab having any shape problems, but the overall
construction seemed to be pretty good. It's also interesting in that
these units were made in Japan and not Korea. Probably some of the last
engines made there.
